Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Augmented intelligence are two terms triumphing over our technical domains – enhancing and building our capabilities to be more precise, accurate, and efficient. AI has swept over all the industries and is assisting humans in a systematic manner; hence there has been an emphasis on renaming ‘Artificial Intelligence’ as ‘Augmented Intelligence’ in recent years.
Augmented intelligence is also called ‘intelligence augmentation’ (IA) and sometimes ‘cognitive augmentation’. It is simply defined as a technological approach dependent on big data that encompasses algorithms of machine learning, natural language processing, and data analytics so as to produce relevant data for targeted choices. It is interesting indeed to note that with artificial intelligence, augmented intelligence extends and supports human intelligence. It is highly resourceful in areas, where the risk of failure is high in models that generally run on artificial intelligence.
While there have been concerns about artificial intelligence replacing humans, augmented intelligence is the ultimate answer to such fears which also pushes the AI revolution forward.
The key issue with artificial intelligence is that it is too vague. It is an umbrella term referring to the ability of machines to carry out tasks that, would require a person to use his/her “intelligence” to perform the tasks. Also, ‘artificial’ sounds quite contrasting to ‘natural’ – thus arousing fears about replacing humans. However, experts do not claim that AI algorithms and models will be perfect or free of error; they claim that they will be better than humans, which again does not help reduce the apprehension surrounding it.
Augmented intelligence promises to work in conjunction with humans and when viewed from its perspective, it does offer quite an impressive number of exciting opportunities. When incorporated in Big data environment, IA extends the power of human intelligence by analyzing large amounts of data. At an enterprise level, it can empower organizations with new insights, new opportunities and define better approaches for working.
Different and Similar
Although the underlying technologies and fundamentals powering both artificial intelligence and augmented intelligence are largely the same, the applications, goals, and objectives are different. While AI aims to create systems that run without humans, augmented intelligence focuses on creating systems that make humans better. By leaving the decision-making process to people, it ensures that human participation is evidently. Simply put, it is supplementary to human capabilities and dos do not emphasize their substitution.
Soon, IA will be integral to numerous types of innovative works. With that, these innovations will surely turn out to be increasingly significant and will positively impact our existence in the future.
